This Month's Selections

Jest Red

Jest Red is not a jest, though it is fun. Made by Belvedere Winery, located in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, it is a lend of seven red varietals. According to the winemaker, at the end of each year there are some odd little gems leftover in the cellar. He blends them together to make Jest Red. As to what seven grapes make up this wine, your guess ia as good as mine. The result, however, is a delightfully flavorable red wine that is a perfect reminder to all of us that wine is about enjoyment and fun.

Jewel 2001 Viognier

Jewel made its debut with the 200 vintage. Located in Lodi, the goal of the winery is to purchase grapes from the best vineyards and appellations in California while maintaining a price point under $10.

This Voignier certainly hits the mark. Voignier, pronounced (vee-own-yeah) finds its origin in the Rhone Valley of France. It is one of the Rhone varieties included in the Cotes du Rhone Blanc. It also makes up the famous wine of Candrieu and is often added to Chateauneuf-du-Pape to add perfume and floral notes to the aroma. The wine is usually reminiscent of apricots, peaches and blossoms. It is meant to be drunk young, while the perfume is at its most heady and before the acidity fades.
This classic Voignier is very aromatic, offering aromas of peaches, with rich citrus flavors. This dry, well-balanced wine offers a great alternative to Chardonnay, ideal for spring and summertime, a very refreshing style. Serve with fish, chicken, pasta and fresh fruit.
